Meeting Overview
There were about 850 registrants for the joint Congress of the ILTS, ELTA and LICAGE held at the Hotel Inter-Continental, Berlin, Germany, July 11-14, 2001. The city of Berlin infrastructure is being refurbished from the ground up. In 1999, the German government along with foreign embassies relocated to Berlin. This is a city rich in culture and arts and is worth visiting.
The meeting was preceded by a full day "Living Donor and Split Liver Transplantation Symposium" supported by Fujisawa. This meeting was co-chaired by Ronald Busuttil, MD, PhD, and Koichi Tanaka, MD. Included were presentations on new surgical techniques, registry updates, and a controversies session. The controversy questions addressed were: "Should adult living transplants be restricted to the good risk recipient?" "Should the split organ be regarded as two organs? Should the middle hepatic vein be reconstructed? A CD-ROM of this symposium will be made available through Fujisawa representatives.
In addition to the "Welcome Reception" at the hotel, a marvelous banquet with musical entertainment was held Thursday evening at the Mercedes Benz Welt. This Mercedes dealership consisted of four floors exhibiting all available models (most were open for meeting attendees to sit in). There were several experimental autos as well as a McLaren-Mercedes Formula 1 car. A farewell party was also provided on Friday night for those individuals remaining overnight in Berlin. At the Business meeting members approved new Bylaws changing from a biennial to annual meeting. Also changed was the President's term of office from two to one year. Meeting site for next year is Chicago, June 13-15, 2002; followed by Barcelona (2003), Japan (2004) and Los Angeles (2005). Many of the oral presentations can be downloaded from the meeting website, www.ilts-berlin.de.
