Baylor women transplant surgeons
Baylor Scott & White Health has the largest team of female abdominal transplant surgeons in the United States.
With five female transplant surgeons, Baylor Annette C. and Harold C. Simmons Transplant Institute in Dallas/Fort Worth, TX boasts the largest group of women transplant surgeons at a single transplant program. These women also hold leadership positions within the diverse abdominal transplant surgery team.
Johanna Bayer, MD, FACS was recently appointed surgical director of transplantation at Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center – Fort Worth. She is the first female director of transplantation in the history of the Baylor Simmons Transplant Institute.
Hoylan Fernandez, MD, MPH, FACS is a multi-organ abdominal transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon and the Chief of Hepatobiliary Surgery at Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center – Fort Worth.
Although women now make up more than half of medical school graduates, surgery is still predominately male dominated. According to estimates, women make up only 10-15% of surgeons in the specialized field of transplant surgery.
