Juan Pablo Arab, Professor of Medicine at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile School of Medicine. Trained at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica, Chile and Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. Dr. Arab is a Transplant Hepatologist and Physician Scientist with interest in translational and clinical research in alcohol-related liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. He is the Director for Living Donor Liver Transplantation at his institution. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers on gastrointestinal and liver diseases in high-impact factor journals, several book chapters and delivered lectures at national and international meetings. He is the Vice-President of the Chilean Hepatology Association and a member of the Education & Scholarship Committee of the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS).

 

 

Moderator

Roberto Hernandez-Alejandro is Chief of the Division of Transplantation at the University of Rochester (URMC) since August 2016. There, he’s demonstrated his ability to grow a program, leading his team to double the number of organ transplants with the best outcomes in the program’s history. Under his leadership, URMC restarted live donor liver transplants, performing 30 operations over 2.5 years as well as introducing a very active program of donation after cardiac death. Dr. Hernandez is also heavily focused on liver resections and is one of a handful of US surgeons performing the ALPPS procedure. Dr. Hernandez recently opened the second active program on liver transplantation for unresectable colorectal liver metastases in the US. Dr. Hernandez has received multiple grants for innovative research in liver cancer and regeneration and has >100 peer-reviewed publications in HPB and liver transplantation. In 2019, he joined the editorial board of Annals of Surgery, the highest impact factor surgical journal. Dr. Hernandez has positions in many societies, including the Scientific Committee of the ALPPS Registry, Chair of the ILTS Education & Scholarship Committee, and President of the New York Liver Transplant Consortium.

 

Presenter

Rodrigo Zapata is a Professor of Medicine, Universidad del Desarrollo, Santiago, Chile. Transplant hepatologist and chief of Gastroenterology at Clínica Alemana de Santiago. He completed an AASLD clinical Fellowship in Hepatology and Liver Transplantation at the University of Southern California (USC) in 2000-2001. He served as the President of the Chilean Association for the Study of the Liver (2008-2010), President of the Chilean Society of Gastroenterology (2012-2014), and International Member of the Global Guidelines Committee of the WGO (2015-2018). His main clinical interests are in liver transplantation, viral hepatitis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, with > 80 peer-reviewed publications and chapters of textbooks, as author or co-author. Currently, coordinator of the Special Interest Group (SIG) for Liver Transplantation of the ALEH (Asociación Latinoamericana para el Estudio del Hígado).

Panelists

Elizabeth Pomfret is a Professor of Surgery and Chief of Transplantation at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, Colorado. She is an established multi-organ transplant surgeon with additional surgical training in living donor liver transplantation. Dr. Pomfret is an international leader within the field of transplantation and was the former Executive Editor of Transplantation, the most highly cited journal in the field of organ transplantation. She served as the President of the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS) from 2014-2015 and on various other organizational and governmental boards including the American Society of Transplant Surgeons Board of Directors as a Councilor-at-Large from 2009 through 2012, and the Organ Procurement Transplantation Network/United Network for Organ Sharing Board of Directors from 2011–2014. Dr. Pomfret is an active researcher with a record of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and has lectured worldwide on current issues in the field.
Julie K. Heimbach is a Professor of Surgery, Transplant surgeon, and Chair of the Division of Transplantation Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, with a primary focus in adult and pediatric liver transplantation and living-donor surgery. Additionally, she is the Director of the Transplant Center. In addition to her clinical activities, Dr. Heimbach is active in research including analysis of outcomes for complex patients such as those with hilar cholangiocarcinoma and other malignancies, or obesity. Dr. Heimbach is also very active in the development of national organ allocation policy having previously served on the Board of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) and as the chair of the OPTN Liver-Intestine Committee. She has also served on the AASLD Governing Board, and the ASTS Council. She is currently an AE for AJT and for the Journal of Hepatology.
Mark Orloff is Professor of Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center, received his M.D. from the University of California School of Medicine, and completed his residency at UCLA Department of Surgery. Dr. Orloff completed fellowship training in hepatobiliary surgery from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, University of London, and in liver transplantation at the University of California. Dr. Orloff joined the Department of Surgery in 1991 and served as Chief of the Division of Solid Organ Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery from 2009-2016. His areas of special interest include liver and hepatobiliary surgery.
Nicolás Jarufe trained as a surgeon at the University of Chile, where he also did his general surgery residency. After that, at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, he did the Digestive Surgery fellowship and then specialized in Hepato-Biliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in England. He is the Past-president de la Sociedad de Cirujanos de Chile. He is currently the Chief of Surgery at the Clinica Las Condes, Santiago, Chile.
Margarita Anders is a Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist specialist at the Hospital Alemán, Buenos Aires, Argentina. She trained at the Universidad del Salvador, and later at the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires where she did her medical clinic residency, intensive therapy residency, and hepatology scholarship. She has worked since 2007 as a hepatologist in the hepatology section and in the Liver Transplant Unit of the Hospital Alemán, Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has an interest in teaching, she was secretary and director of the hepatology specialist course of the Argentine Society of Hepatology. She is currently a teacher at the University of Salvador, the Hospital Teaching Unit of the University of Buenos Aires at the Hospital Alemán, and Director of the hepatology and liver transplant scholarship at the Hospital Alemán.
Paulo Bittencourt graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Bahia (1990) and Ph.D. in Clinical Gastroenterology from the University of São Paulo (1999). He is currently the coordinator of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Unit at Hospital Português and the clinical coordinator of liver transplantation at the Real Sociedade Portuguesa de Beneficência. He served as a collaborating professor at the postgraduate studies at Instituto Gonçalo Moniz / FIOCRUZ-BA and at the Faculty of Medicine at UFBA. He has experience in internal medicine, with an emphasis on gastroenterology, digestive endoscopy, hepatology, and liver transplantation, with an interest in the following topics: immunogenetics of autoimmune liver diseases, autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, postoperative liver transplantation, and intensive care in the critical cirrhotic patient. He is the Past-President of the Brazilian Society of Hepatology-Bienio 2018-2019.
